The Miscalculation of a Delusional Ayatollah and His Remaining Cronies

The Ayatollah and his remaining cronies have once again miscalculated the ability and resolve of the West—particularly the United States and its European allies—to confront the Islamic Republic.

Following the recent 12‑day war, initiated by Israel with partial participation from the U.S. and ending with a ceasefire now in place, the Ayatollah, who owes his very survival in part to President Trump, seems unable or unwilling to grasp the real message of change for Iran and the broader Middle East.

As Senator Lindsey Graham spelled out for them, “there’s a new sheriff in town.” In other words, there’s a new order in the Middle East.

Yet it appears that the Ayatollah, with whatever days he lives, and his cronies, they misunderstood the warnings before the military strikes by Israel and the U.S., the Ayatollah and his circle are again sending the "very bad signals", as President Trump put it. Having reportedly spent 12 days in hiding—perhaps in a bunker within or even outside Iran—he has re‑emerged clinging to old rhetoric: continued uranium enrichment, an unyielding grip on power, and insistence on the status quo in Iran.

This response shows a leader out of touch with reality, both old and mentally unfit to recognise the existential threat his regime now faces—ironically one he himself once described as a disastrous path for Iran. Persisting with uranium enrichment and ballistic missile programs—policies even President Putin of Russia suggested halting—underscores the regime’s dangerous miscalculation of the West’s determination to implement its vision for a New Middle East, a vision---that undoubtedly runs through a New Iran.

As we predicted two years ago in this space, unprecedented change is coming to the Middle East and especially to Iran. The Ayatollah, who may not be alive much longer, and his regime face unavoidable transformation.

If they continue to miscalculate, misread their position, and cling to what Iran and its people have endured for 46 years under this regime, they will face a harsh reality: the future of Iran will be decided not by an aging clerical elite but by a new generation of Iranians.
