White House and A Begging Ayatollah
With President Trump now firmly seated in the White House, his administration has set its sights on one of its top foreign policy priorities: addressing the Ayatollahs' regime in Iran. The Ayatollahs, long a source of regional instability, find themselves at their weakest point in decades, grappling with domestic uprisings, a crumbling economy, and the erosion of their network of proxies across the Middle East.
The Iranian regime is facing mounting challenges on multiple fronts. Domestically, widespread protests and unrest reflect growing frustration among Iranians over corruption, economic hardship, and political oppression. International sanctions have exacerbated the economic crisis, leaving the regime struggling to maintain control.
Regionally, Iran's proxies are crumbling. Hamas and Hezbollah, once dominant actors in Gaza and Lebanon, have been weakened by targeted pressure and internal disarray. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's, a critical ally of Tehran, demise further isolating the regime. The Houthis in Yemen, heavily backed by Iran, are facing significant setbacks and are inline to be dealt with. This network of alliances, critical to Tehran’s regional influence, is unraveling rapidly.
Mullahs' desperate measures
In a bid to project an image of reform, the Ayatollahs have strategically replaced their hardline former president, Ebrahim Raisi, with a so-called reformist figure, Masoud Pezeshkian. This move, however, is widely seen as a superficial public relations effort, given that Iran’s constitution ensures that ultimate power remains entrenched with the Supreme Leader and the ruling clerical establishment.
In an effort to enhance this facade, Iran has introduced Abbas Araghchi as the new Foreign Minister, while former Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has been appointed as an international adviser to the new president. Despite these changes, these officials hold no genuine legitimacy, as they are not democratically elected representatives of the Iranian populace. Their roles appear to serve the regime's attempt to placate international scrutiny rather than address the underlying demands for meaningful reform and accountability.
The Ayatollahs’ gambit is clear: to repackage their regime as a cooperative partner while maintaining their grip on power. However, President Trump and his team have made it evident that this superficial effort will not suffice.
Newly approved Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during his Senate approval hearing:
"The Ayatollahs and their regime in Tehran have been a source of instability, oppression, and terror for far too long. Their nuclear ambitions, ballistic missile programs, and unwavering support for terrorism threaten not only the region but global security. Let me be clear: the United States will not stand by as the Iranian people suffer under the grip of this theocratic tyranny, nor will we tolerate actions that endanger our allies and interests.
Our administration is committed to ensuring that Iran’s rulers face the consequences of their choices. The Iranian regime must abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons, dismantle its missile programs, and end its support for terror proxies across the Middle East and beyond. Most importantly, we stand with the people of Iran in their rightful pursuit of freedom, dignity, and self-determination.
The time for appeasement is over. The Ayatollahs must understand that this administration will act decisively to protect our interests, support our allies, and uphold the principles of liberty and justice. We will give the regime a narrow window of opportunity to comply with these demands, but rest assured, we are prepared to act if they fail to do so."
Rubio’s resolute stance underscores the Trump administration’s firm approach toward the Iranian regime and its commitment to supporting the Iranian people’s fight for freedom.

The message is unambiguous: the Ayatollahs must either conform to these demands or face severe consequences.
A Firm Stance
The Trump administration should categorically refuse to recognise the Ayatollahs’ hand-picked diplomats and officials as legitimate representatives or equals on the international stage. Instead, it should emphasise that Iran’s leadership must fully comply with the demands of the Iranian people, which align closely with the United States' key priorities. These include:
Complete Transparency and Dismantling of Nuclear Programs
Mullahs must halt uranium enrichment, dismantling nuclear capabilities under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Allow unrestricted inspections by international agencies to ensure compliance with global non-proliferation standards.Termination of Ballistic Missile Development
Mullahs must cease their ballistic missile development and testing programs, which pose a direct threat to regional and global security.End Support for Terrorism
The regime must withdraw all support for proxy groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, as well as other organisations contributing to instability in the region and beyond.Withdrawal from Regional Conflicts
Mullahs must end its interference in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, and other nations, ceasing its efforts to exert influence through violence and subversion.Respect for Human Rights and Democratic Reforms
The Iranian leadership must address the grievances of its people, including respecting basic human rights, ending political oppression, and moving towards legitimate democratic governance.
A theocratic tyranny does not represent Iran or her people. The regime’s nuclear ambitions, ballistic missile programs, and support for terrorism are not tools of national progress but instruments to tighten the Mullahs’ grip on power, both within Iran and beyond its borders. These capabilities serve only to oppress the Iranian people further and destabilise the region and beyond.
Imposing restrictions and dismantling these capabilities align with the true national interests of the Iranian people. Such measures weaken the regime’s oppressive machinery and pave the way for the Iranian people to reclaim their nation. By limiting the regime’s tools of tyranny, the people of Iran can work towards recovering their country from this despotic rule and strive for emancipation as free citizens.
This liberation includes establishing full citizenship rights, reclaiming ownership of their country, and securing the human rights and dignity they deserve as citizens of a sovereign, democratic Iran. The international community, led by the United States, must focus its efforts on supporting these aspirations and ensuring that Iran’s oppressive rulers are held accountable, paving the way for a brighter future for the Iranian people.
President Trump’s administration should make it unequivocally clear that failure to comply with these demands will result in further isolation, increased sanctions, and potentially decisive actions to ensure global peace and security. The Ayatollahs must understand that this is their last opportunity to relinquish power peacefully and allow Iran to embrace a new era of freedom, democracy, and prosperity.
A Final Chance
President Trump’s strategy offers Iran’s leadership one final opportunity to relinquish power peacefully. Should they refuse, the administration has signaled its readiness to take decisive action to protect U.S. interests and ensure stability in the Middle East. This approach underscores the administration’s belief that the regime’s survival is incompatible with regional and global security.
The Ayatollahs stand at a crossroads. With their domestic and regional influence waning, they must decide whether to cooperate with the Trump administration or risk the full weight of U.S. power. One thing is certain: the era of appeasement is over, and the Ayatollahs are running out of options.
